How to Become a Minimalist in the Classroom?

Is it possible for teachers like you to adopt minimalism in the school considering the number of papers, documents and various stuff you must deal with daily? The answer is yes. A teacher can be a minimalist too! How would you go about doing this? Here are a few easy steps to get you started on the path to a minimalist lifestyle in the classroom.

Set up a tidy teacher’s table.

A clean desk contributes to mental clarity. Make sure the tabletop is free from unnecessary clutter. Only the frequently needed materials must be there like pencil, ballpen, eraser, stapler etc. To organize them, put them all in a tray or jar. The drawers must be clean and only important documents must be kept inside. School supplies like staple wires, coupon bonds and other less frequently used stuff can be placed there too.

Return students’ outputs promptly.

One of the primary causes of teachers' paper piles is their delay in returning student work. They enjoy saving the assignments and papers that are given to them. Check and record the works of students and return these to them immediately. This will clear out some clutter and provide quick feedback on their performance.

Digitize and have multi-purpose instructional materials.

Today's top educational resources are multimedia-based. The only essential tools for digitized instructional materials are televisions, monitors, and computers. These assist in making classrooms less congested. If concrete materials are required, strive to create or buy multipurpose materials instead—those that can be used to teach a variety of themes or topics. Put them in space-saving cabinets or organizers.

Declutter cabinets.

If there are cabinets in the classroom, check that their contents are being used regularly and are all necessary for the teaching and learning process. Get rid of items that add to the clutter by donating, recycling or selling them.

Have a place for everything.

One of the best strategies to reduce the amount of clutter is to have a place for everything. Put student possessions in their lockers or cabinets. The number of supplies in the classroom should be maintained to a minimum. One of the most crucial components of a clean classroom is the garbage can, which should be available for everyone's waste.
